This page is being developed in conjunction with preparations for the celebration of the first 50 years of Arawa Canoe Club. We aim to present a summary of the events, characters and legends that have contributed to the success of the club over the years.
The information collected here is the result of many hours of research, trolling through historical records. While every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy and completeness of the information presented here, we would appreciate any input that helps to build on the gaps and correct any errors or misinterpretation. Please contact email@example.com if you are able to offer information or suggestions for improvement.
1967 - The first dated records of the Arawa Canoe Club suggest that the club was formed in the first half of 1967. The annual subscription for Senior members was set at £ 1.0s.0d and £ 0.10s.0d for Juniors, under 16 years.
18th of June, 1967 - Possibly the first documented club day held at Kerr's Reach.
24th of October, 1968 - Arawa Canoe Club registered as an Incorporated Society.
The Arawa Shark logo appeared on early club correspondence. We'd like to confirm it's origin and credit the artist who was responsible for it's design. If you can shed any light on this please let us know. According to Maori legend Te Arawa was the name of the name of the canoe (and tribe) that travelled from Hawaiki to Aotearoa. The name was derived from a species of shark.
An early newsletter describes a very social event descending down the Avon from Deans Ave with various "portages" of note along the way. Seven Perilous Portages describes the event in humourous detail.
Arawa leased clubrooms at Kerr's Reach from the Union Rowing Club. The building had been on the site since 1952 when it was transported from Lyttelton. Membership at the time was recorded as 35.
The clubrooms previously leased from URC were purchased with the help of Community Trust Funding.
Kayak storage racks increased from 40 cappacity to 65.
AGM approved formation of working group to redevelop the clubrooms.
2001 - AGM approved the complete development plan for the new clubrooms.
2002.03.08 - The Burning of the Original Clubrooms
2002/3 - New Club Room development coordinated by Terry Duff (Architect), Graham Allan (Project Coordinator), John Corney and Lloyd Bathurst
2003 - New Club Rooms opened by Christchurch Mayor, Garry Moore

Their have been many people over the years who have contributed to and represented Arawa with pride and passion. This page acknowledges those people and their individual and collective effort in building Arawa into the club that it is today.
