ARAWA CLUB HISTORY

This page is being developed in conjunction with preparations for the celebration of the first 50 years of Arawa Canoe Club. We aim to present a summary of the events, characters and legends that have contributed to the success of the club over the years.

The information collected here is the result of many hours of research, trolling through historical records. While every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy and completeness of the information presented here, we would appreciate any input that helps to build on the gaps and correct any errors or misinterpretation. Please contact 50years@arawa.org.nz if you are able to offer information or suggestions for improvement.

Timeline

Chronology - Key milestones

The Beginning

1967 - The first dated records of the Arawa Canoe Club suggest that the club was formed in the first half of 1967. The annual subscription for Senior members was set at £ 1.0s.0d and £ 0.10s.0d for Juniors, under 16 years.

18th of June, 1967 - Possibly the first documented club day held at Kerr's Reach.

24th of October, 1968 - Arawa Canoe Club registered as an Incorporated Society.

The Arawa Shark logo appeared on early club correspondence. We'd like to confirm it's origin and credit the artist who was responsible for it's design. If you can shed any light on this please let us know. According to Maori legend Te Arawa was the name of the name of the canoe (and tribe) that travelled from Hawaiki to Aotearoa. The name was derived from a species of shark.
